What is the biggest and most important decision you are ever going to make as a speaker for your next presentation? It is not what you think it is.
People often wonder: should I use slides or not. Should I use video or not. Should I wear a tie, or a suit, or a dress. Should I focus on walking around the room. No! Those are not the things that are going to have a huge impact.
In my experience, the number one decision you make that has an impact on your speech is: how many message points you are going to try and convey in your speech? Great speakers have a lot of differences but they all have one thing in common: they are not greedy. They do not try to tell you everything they have ever learned in the last ten years. They focus on only a handful of ideas at most.
Awful speakers are all the same: they try to tell you way too much and end up dumping data on you. That is why the big decision is how many points you want to convey in this presentation. If you narrow it down to a handful or fewer, there is a great chance that you are going to be successful.
If you have way more than five points, you have almost guaranteed your failure as a speaker because people are not going to remember what you said.
Keep that in mind at decision time.
