We live in a world with a million distractions. It seems like every 2.3 seconds there is a new study coming out to prove that peoples’ attention spans have shrunk to 2.3 seconds! So skilled communicators put an even greater emphasis on being concise and brief, right?
Not so fast!
In a world of sound bites and superficiality, one way of standing out is by being more substantive than all your competition.
I am not proud of the fact that out of more than 120 courses I’ve launched on Udemy, the vast majority have not been successful.
But I have had more than half a dozen bestsellers, so I have noticed a few trends and learned a few lessons.
The big secret to my successful courses is MORE. More quality, but also more quantity, more lectures, more hours, more handouts.
I wish I had a simple gimmick to share with you that would seem brilliant, quick and easy to follow. But I don’t. Instead I have just this: more hard work. More substance. More attentiveness.
Because here is the surprising results of my nearly 5 years of teaching on Udemy.
Out of more than 120 active courses I have on Udemy, nearly 75% of all my revenue comes from just 5 courses. (so no, the 80-20 rule doesn’t apply here)
So what is different about these five courses? They all have “Complete” in the title and they are all really, really long. The shortest course is 13 hours long and all the rest are in the 25-30 hour range. (by the way, I’ve never done a super long course that wasn’t really successful)
Am I guaranteeing that if you spend the next 8 months making a 100 hour course you will be successful? No, it might fail miserably. I’m simply sharing what has worked for me. Am I saying that the next time you are asked to give a 15 minute speech that you should talk for 4 hours? No, but you need to think about know you can deliver extra value, perhaps by having extra handouts, or staying after the session to answer every single question, no matter how long it takes.
If you want to see what bestselling courses look and sound like (at least mine) here is a $9,99 discount coupon (below) for my 5 best selling courses that account for nearly all of my revenues and success here on Udemy. You might not have the time or the interest in watching every minute, but I think you can learn a lot by studying the structure, especially if you are ever thinking of making your own courses.
