Feeling Stalked? How Employers Are Using Social Media for Background Checks

Recruiters and employers are both using social networks to check out candidates. A new study by Reppler asked 300 hiring managers how they were using social media sites. Here’s what they said:

1. 91% said they use sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Craigslist, Tumblr, Myspace, etc. to screen candidates.

2. 69% said they had rejected a candidate based on what they found, which included the following:

• 13% lied about qualifications
• 11% posted inappropriate photos
• 11% posted inappropriate comments
• 11% posted negative comments about a previous employer
• 11% demonstrated poor communications skills
• 10% made discriminatory comments
