Exploring the Future of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence

In our latest podcast episode, we had the pleasure of hosting Steve Favis, the founder and CTO of Favis Advanced Robotics Corporation. To help his father, young Steve read computer programming books aloud and even typed some of the programs himself. This early exposure to coding fostered a love for technology that continued into his adult life, ultimately guiding him to work for leading companies in the gaming industry and, later, establish his own robotics company.

Reflecting on these experiences, Steve shared how iconic games like Galaga and Pac-Man initially hooked him on technology. In fact, Steve worked in the gaming industry for 12 years, including time at Electronic Arts. He described video games as the “gateway drug” to technology, explaining that they offer a way to engage with complex systems, algorithms, and mechanics in a fun and interactive environment.

From Video Games to Robotics

Steve’s transition from gaming to robotics was a natural progression. He recognized that many principles used in game design, such as simulation, algorithms, and physics modeling, could be applied to robotics. This realization came during a NASA and DARPA hackathon, where Steve tested an algorithm in a video game engine designed to control a device similar to Alexa for astronauts a small floating orb that uses CO2 to propel itself in zero gravity. Using the gaming engine, he was able to simulate the physics and train the device to interact in real-world conditions.

This hackathon experience marked a turning point in his career. He began to explore how AI and robotics could be trained in simulators before deployment in the real world, significantly reducing the time and risk associated with training. “It’s like growing a robot baby in a simulator until it’s ready for adulthood,” Steve explained. By simulating real-world conditions, AI models can learn and adapt more rapidly, making them better prepared for real-world deployment.

Robots in the Home: A Vision for the Future

Steve’s vision for robotics in the home sparked an intriguing discussion on how AI-driven robots could relieve people from mundane and repetitive chores, freeing up time for more meaningful activities. From doing dishes to cleaning and even laundry, Steve believes that robots can eventually take on household responsibilities, allowing us to focus on spending time with family and pursuing personal interests.

The concept of a household robot, akin to “Rosie” from The Jetsons, is already in development at Favis Advanced Robotics. Steve described his robot prototype as anatomically similar to humans, allowing it to handle standard human tools and tasks seamlessly. With capabilities for delicate movements and object manipulation, these robots could soon handle a wide variety of household tasks, marking a shift towards AI-assisted living.

The potential for such technology is vast, particularly for people with physical limitations or those who simply want to spend less time on chores. Steve’s excitement about bringing robotics into everyday life was palpable: “Imagine having a robot that can do all the things you don’t enjoy, letting you focus on what really matters.”

Enhancing Safety and Efficiency in Dangerous Fields

Beyond household tasks, Steve envisions robots playing crucial roles in high-risk jobs such as firefighting and agriculture. Robots equipped to withstand extreme conditions could enter hazardous environments, reducing the need for human intervention. For example, a robot could enter a burning building, navigate wildfire zones, or work in areas with toxic exposure tasks that are currently life-threatening for human workers.

In agriculture, robots could help with labor-intensive activities like picking crops, which are notoriously hard on the human body. By deploying robots in these roles, we could not only increase productivity but also reduce the physical strain on workers, making these essential jobs more manageable and sustainable.

The Potential and the Risks of Autonomous Systems

The conversation naturally turned to the potential risks of autonomous robots, especially in military and law enforcement contexts. Steve acknowledged the ethical complexities surrounding AI-driven military applications. While autonomous robots could reduce risks to human soldiers, they also raise significant concerns about control and accountability.

To mitigate these risks, Steve emphasized the importance of thorough testing in simulated environments before deploying robots in the real world. His company’s approach ensures that AI models learn to handle complex scenarios under various lighting and weather conditions. This meticulous process reduces the chances of AI making dangerous errors when operating independently.

Moreover, Steve pointed out that having robots assist in non-combat roles, like bomb disposal or search and rescue, could save lives without the ethical challenges posed by autonomous combat robots.
