Comments on Barack Obama's Style in his Inaugural Address:
Obama gave an average speech. But an 'average' speech for Obama has been fantastic, stylistically, at least for the last year. Obama continued to read the teleprompter well (not a skill that should ever be dismissed). Obama pauses brilliantly, changes his pace, speed, tone and volume for maximum dramatic impact. Everything about Obama’s body language and use of his voice conveys confidence, authority, and command.
Lesson 4:
The big picture.

There are four goals you should try to accomplish every time you give a presentation.
1. Speak so that your audience understands you.
2. Speak so that your audience remembers your messages.
3. Motivate your audience to act on your message.
4. Motivate your audience to tell other people about your message.
If you don't accomplish all four goals, you haven't done yourself much good (and you've likely wasted your audience's time).
The hardest part for most speakers is learning the discipline of narrowing down dozens and dozens of messages to just a handful and then spending the time to make each point memorable. Less is more in the world of speaking. The real work of speech craft is figuring out ways of making your points stick in the memories of your audience so that they can't forget your message even if they wanted to.
"This CD is mis-named. It should be called The Dozens and Dozens of Secrets to Speaking Like Barack Obama. You'll be amazed while you're being informed, as T.J. Walker breaks down Obama's style into all the infinite and eminently replicable techniques of voice, gesture, even content. The video is an overwhelmingly good value. " - David Murray |
