Speaking/Presentation Tips
1. Audio or videotape your rehearsal of your speech. Then review it carefully.
2. Don't write your speech in one sitting--instead, takes notes and write down anecdotes (with people, places and dialogue) as they occur to you.
3. Use every speech you give as a focus group for improving your NEXT speech. This means you must analyze how your audience is reacting to you while you are speaking.
4. Don't put your notes on the lectern ahead of time, someone may walk off with them.
5. The advantage of every visual aid must be offset by the chance that the visual aid may fall apart or not work properly.
TV/Media Tips
6. If you are being interviewed in a TV studio, you may ask that the TV monitor nearest you is turned off. That way, you won't get distracted looking at yourself.
7. If you are wearing an audio earpiece, make sure it fits properly. Alert the producer immediately if the earpiece does not stay in your ear easily.
8. If you like your quotes and sound bites, reuse them again and again, if they meet your message.
9. Assume everything you say is on the record unless you have a very specific agreement otherwise. If the pencils, recorders and TV cameras have been put away and you are walking the reporter to the door, anything interesting you say can be used in the story.
10. During phone interviews, have your three-point message plus sound bites typed out and in front of you.
