Speaking/Presentation Tips

1. Always use a teleprompter-if you are like the President of the United States and have to give three speeches a day and have no time to rehearse.

2. If you are not the President, then NEVER USE A TELEPROMPTER. It will make you sound stiff, boring, monotone and robotic-and it will give you false confidence and make you less inclined to practice.

3. If you aren't a funny person with your friends and family, then don't try to be funny for the first time when giving a speech.

4. Don't start speaking until everyone in the room has stopped speaking.

TV/Media Tips

5. Don't wait for the media to call you.

6. Don't demand to be called "Doctor" or "Ph.D." or people will think you are a sanctimonious windbag.

7. Don't audio or videotape an interview in front of a reporter unless you are 99% sure you are going to be mistreated.

8. It's fine to audio tape any print or radio interview when you are in your home or office (check your state laws to see if both parties have to be informed.)

Crisis Communications Tips

9. Occasionally, you will think you are just having a casual conversation with a reporter.

10. You won't hear any typing or see any note taking, but your comments will still end up in a story.
