Speaking/Presentation Tips

1. If you must show a web site during a presentation, place every page you want to see on a CD and show from that.

2. PowerPoint presentations can be quite effective, but nobody every got promoted to CEO, won political office, or developed a reputation as a great communicator by relying on PowerPoint.

3. Don't pack and ship your presentation. Always carry it with you.

4. Never speak in front of an open window, it is too distracting.

5. If you are presenting on a conference call, don't read your text, unless you are the CFO of a public company and a lawyer has a gun to your head.

TV/Media Tips

6. Don't look at the camera unless a producer orders you to do so.

7. When appearing on TV, don't think about the audience; instead focus on the one person you are talking to at that moment. Since you talk to one person at a time all day long anyway, there is no reason to be nervous.

8. If your earpiece pops out during the middle of a live TV satellite interview, don't scream, "Oh my god! I can't hear anything! I've lost my earpiece!" Instead, simply find the earpiece with your hand closest to it, put it back in your ear, and act like it's no big deal.

9. Don't sit behind a desk in your office when interviewed, sit in an open chair or while standing.

Crisis Communications Tip

10. Do not "cut off" reporters after they have covered your crisis. Otherwise they will be quick to do more negative stories about you (continue reaching out to them regarding other positive news stories you have).
